Details of our Projects:
Early Childhood Development Programme – Philippi Township
We have a kindergarten just outside the Philippi Township, where we have 3 classrooms. One is a creche, where the children are very young. The other two classrooms are our kindergarten age children, who have not previously had access to any form of education. We have three dedicated teachers from the community, and as part of your programme as a volunteer or intern, you will assist the teachers with reading, teaching, playing games, etc.
The children love the interaction with others, as it teaches them about people from all over the world, and helps with communication skills. We have regular Community Days where volunteers can spend a Saturday with the children, playing games and interacting with them.
This is perfect for volunteers or interns studying early childhood development, social work, psychology, or those interested in working with children.
Aftercare Programme for Children
We currently run an aftercare programme for the children who attend school in the Salt River area, and also for those that don’t attend school at all due to various issues. We provide a safe, fun environment for the children, who can do their homework, play games, and interact with volunteers. It is on the same premises as our Soup Kitchen, and most of our Volunteers help out in the Soup Kitchen in the morning, and then assist with the Aftercare Programme in the afternoons.
Our Soup Kitchen is open from Monday to Friday. We serve a substantial meal of rice, meat, vegetables, bread and tea/coffee. We have a large number of people that come to us daily, so Volunteers are always needed to assist with cooking and serving of meals.
We have a Homeless Shelter for Men and Women, which is open every day of the year. Here, volunteers can work side by side with our Social Worker as well as our Auxiliary Social Worker, to assist those in need of shelter, as well as assist those already in the Shelter, with things like our Skills Training Programmes, etc. Volunteers can also help with the cooking and serving of meals, and generally interacting with the Shelter residents.
